vgersh is saying that you could have just as easily done:

Code:
for file in *.txt

and saved yourself the ls execution.


As far as the error goes, I think it's in your if statement. You're missing a set of parenthesis.

correction
In your script you have defined pscnt and while using ur using it a word which is a variable. Hence suggestion is : use,
if ( $pscnt -lt $MAXCNT )
instead of if ( pscnt < MAXCNT )
