grep help

Hi, I am stuck in this script doing multiple grep

If I give the following, it works fine:

#!/usr/bin/ksh
export ENV=`/usr/ucb/whoami | cut -b6`
export USR=`/usr/ucb/whoami`
#Sourcing the server
. /netprov/env$ENV/server/mng/utility/syccpovdef
cd $CCP_AUDIT

echo "UserId:\c"
read UserId

#Date Function
echo "DATE [YYYY-MM-DD] : \c"
read xxx

cat * |egrep -e "Error|Warning|Rejected" > /export/home/$USR/l***/one

But I also need to add $UserId and $xxx(for date) inthe grep. Not sure how???

tried awk, but it is not giving me the result i want.

Thanks,
Gundu

Given that you're going through log files, the $UserId and $xxx probably appear in the same relative places, e.g., "fred <stuff> date <stuff> query status". Just replace "<stuff>" with ".*" and wrap your original RE in parens. Keep using "double quotes" around your RE and shell variables will be expanded there. And what I wrote yesterday about UUOC still applies. Oh, and the "-e" option to egrep is only needed if your RE starts with a hyphen.

Code:
egrep "$UserId.*$xxx.*(Error|Warning|Rejected)" * > outfile

My log file looks like this :
2005-03-28 09:45:22 SYNIFSSS006003I1 50305 Provisioning Transaction Created by lp6728(UserId)
2005-03-28 09:45:22 SYNIFSSS006070I1 50305 Provisioning Transaction Description: Provisioning by lp6728: Create, classname=S
IVXVPNAccessPath, name=Site1

2005-03-28 09:45:22 SYNIFSSS126003I1 50305 Provisioning Transaction 50305 processing with pid 23377 in /netprov/env7/server/
log/output/2005-03-25.10:02:38/SYCCSServer_23377.0

date and userid are not in set places, it starts with date field.

I tried : and it is giving no such userid:

egrep ["$UserId *" "$xxx *" "(Error|Warning|Rejected)"] * > /export/home/$USR/***/one

if [ -s /export/home/$USR/l***/one ]; then
Mail -s "Transactions for $UserId" ***@***.com < /export/home/$USR/***/one
else
echo No such userid $UserId >&2
break
fi
rm /export/home/$USR/***/one

Thanks,
Gundu

Given the example logfile you've displayed, then a simple grep such as
Code:
grep "^$xxx.*$UserID.*$" logfile

Would display the lines from the logfile containing the required date and UserID.

If you want to egrep for the (Error|Warning|Rejected) stuff, you need to provide a sample of the logfile showing how these statii are presented in the logfile.

Try this:
cat *|egrep "$UserId|$xxx|Error|Warning|Rejected" > outfile

No need for cat here....

egrep "blah" * > outfile
