Answer for your questions

${string##substring} Deletes longest match of $substring from front of $string

${string%%substring} Deletes longest match of $substring from back of $string.

Code:

$ a=one.txt
$ echo $a
one.txt
$ echo ${a##*.}
txt
$ echo ${a%%.*}
one
