Uncompressed files

Can anyone please help me how to find the list of uncompressed files in a directory and compress it.

My requirement is to omit the previously compressed files.

The directory may consist any type of file.

say for eg, it may files with .txt extensions or .xls etc.

Suggestions will be really helpful.

Ok. What compression software do you use: gzip, zip, compress?

Identify the files in the directory that do not have the file type (.gz, .zip, .Z).

You need to add the correct filetype into this script and the correct compress command.

Code:
filetype=you put an entry here like .gz or .zip
find /path/to/directory -type f  ! -name "\*"${filetype}  -exec  your comopress command goes here like gzip  {} \;

Note the {} thing is the file name, so if your compress software is gzip, then you only use the word gzip, becase the file name is already there.

filetype=.gz
find /home/c3/qa/data/archive/test/radhika_dont_touch/testing_purpose -type -f ! -name "\*"${filetype} -exec gzip \;

this is not compressing.

Can you please explain me what it does exactly.

Code:
filetype=".gz"
find /home/c3/qa/data/archive/test/radhika_dont_touch/testing_purpose -type -f  ! -name "*${filetype}" -exec gzip {} \;

Can you list the files you want to compress?

find command is trying to find the files in the directory /home/c3/qa/data/archive/test/radhika_dont_touch/testing_purpose whose extension is not .gz
Do you have any files inside this directory without the extension .gz?

Please paste the output of
Code:
find /home/c3/qa/data/archive/test/radhika_dont_touch/testing_purpose -type -f  ! -name "*.gz"

Which OS and Shell are you using?
