Shell Programming and Scripting

Hi All

I am very much new to Shell scripting. I have a requirement to write a shell script. Please help me on this. Scenario is as follows

We have a task which has around 54 subtasks in it and it is scheduled to run each day night. There is a perl script written to log the start time , end time and elapsed time of each task. If any ORA error occurs in any of the task, I should get the time and the respective task name in which the ORA has occured. Please help....

To make much more clearer -
Say a Task A starts at 1 AM and ends at 3 AM, After Task A completes Task B starts... The perl script creates an output time.txt file showing the start time end time and elapsed time of Task A, Task B and so on... If an ORA error occurs around 2 AM, and another ORA error occurs by 4 AM, Then i should get an output file listing the ORA error and the taskname.... The output has to be as follows :
TASK A : ORA errors list (the ORA error occured between 1 to 3)
TASK B : ORA errors list (the ORA error occured between 3 to 4)

In other words, you should be able to trap the error alone (ie not regular messages also) and display them in the perl output when the sub-task throws an error?

Yes... you are right... But not in the perl output, rather in another new output file where i can see only the task name and ORA error occured during that task...

As far as I know, Oracle doesn't permit sending errors to another scripts directly.

Otherwise you would simply do:

or the equivalent in a series of perl calls.

So I looked at OTN and ORAFAQ. There is no simple well known direct way to trap errors.

You have to pass the output content to a programme like awk or sed to isolate lines by keywords ORA and so on as in the example below
