Hi all Unix gurus,

I have a directory that contain multiple daily backups of multiple systems with this format:

sys1_192.168.0.1_20091119.145130
sys1_192.168.0.1_20091120.145130
sys2_192.168.0.2_20091120.154865
sys2_192.168.0.2_20091120.154865

and so on...

I have this code to list the IPs of all systems along with their backups in this format (csv format):

192.168.0.1,sys1_192.168.0.1_20091119.145130,sys1_192.168.0.1_20091119.145130
192.168.0.2,sys2_192.168.0.2_20091120.154865,sys2_192.168.0.2_20091120.154865

ls -t | awk -F"_" ' {arr[$2]=arr[$2]","$0 } END { for(i in arr) { print i arr[i] } } '

However, the code prints the output with all the backups. How can I modify it to only print first 5 backups:

There are many ways - one:

ls -t | head -5 | awk -F"_" ' {arr[$2]=arr[$2]","$0 } END { for(i in arr) { print i arr[i] } } '

Could you add

head -5

into your script?

Well, head -5 would only give me the first 5 backups from the directory. What I need is the first five backup for each IP address on each line of the csv file.

the csv file should look like this:

192.168.0.1,sys1_192.168.0.1_date1,sys1_192.168.0.1_date2,sys1_192.168.0.1_date3, sys1_192.168.0.1_date4,sys1_192.168.0.1_date5
192.168.0.2,sys1_192.168.0.2_date1,sys1_192.168.0.2_date2,sys1_192.168.0.1_date3, sys1_192.168.0.2_date4,sys1_192.168.0.2_date5

The first field is the IP and whats in bold are the first 5 backup from the array.
