Position of a string using AWK

I'm plowing through a bunch of text (and I have to use awk) and need to identify which position a certain string is in. Consider the two lines...
Code:
UP BROADCAST RUNNING SLAVE MULTICAST MTU:1372 Metric:1
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING  MTU:16436  Metric:1

I can identify the line by searching for MTU:. But I want to know which position the MTU string is in. Positions 6 and 4 in the two cases above.

Is there a quick trick for this or should I fight to write the script in perl?

A for-loop should cover it.

Code:
$ awk '{for(i=1;i<=NF;i++) if( $i ~ /^MTU:/ ) print i}' file
6
4

Code:
awk '/MTU:/{print NR;NR=0}' RS=" +"

Note: Only gawk and mawk can handle regex RS.
