How to use Sed on string

Hi, I am trying to use SED command on one string. But its not working for me. I have checked all the sites for examples, I have used almost all commands to get the output. but I could not.

My requirement is :

In the below string, I want to replace "." with ":"

16.04.38

Output should be 16:04:38

I used: echo "16.04.38" | sed 's/./:/'

It did not work. Can anyone please help me.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if OP can or not use awk, it's just an alternative. Just in case... Smilie
