problem with while...do...done

Goodmorning to everybody

I want to calcolate the relation between the files on the file system and the their used space

I tried:

Code:
#! /bin/sh

numFile=$(find / -type f | wc -l)
SIZE=0
du / | while read DIR; do
      TEMP=$(echo $DIR | awk '{print $1}')
      SIZE=$(expr $SIZE + $TEMP)
      # echo $SIZE
done
echo $numFILE
echo $SIZE  # PRINT 0 !!!!!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE???? :S
expr $numFile : $SIZE

Why when I print the value of SIZE after the end of cicle this value is 0?????

Hi.

bash (which I presume your #! /bin/sh points to) will start a sub-shell when using a pipe to a while loop.

One solution (not POSIX) is to use process substitution instead:

Code:
#! /bin/sh

numFile=$(find / -type f | wc -l)
SIZE=0
while read DIR; do
      TEMP=$(echo $DIR | awk '{print $1}')
      SIZE=$(expr $SIZE + $TEMP)
      # echo $SIZE
done < <(du /)
echo $numFILE
echo $SIZE  # PRINT 0 !!!!!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE???? :S
expr $numFile : $SIZE

Another would be to store the output of du to a file, and then read the file in the while loop:

Code:
...
du / > somefile.tmp
while read FILE_SIZE OTHER_STUFF; do
  SIZE=$((SIZE + $FILE_SIZE))
done < somefile.tmp
...

Hi, this would work in ksh, but in bash the part after the | is executed in a subshell. Once the subshell exists, the variables set therein no longer exist and thus report zero.

You could try something like this:
Code:
numFile=$(find / -type f | wc -l)
SIZE=0
du / | {
  while read TEMP x; do
        SIZE=$(expr $SIZE + $TEMP)
        # echo $SIZE
  done
  echo $numFILE
  echo $SIZE  # PRINT 0 !!!!!!! HOW IS IT POSSIBLE???? :S
  expr $numFile : $SIZE
}

check out the du -s and -k options by the way.

I usually just do
Code:
du -a |sort -r -n

Gives a list of all the files and directories sorted in descending order by disk space used.

SOLVED

ok, I solved in this way

Code:
#! /bin/sh

numFile=0
SIZE=0
find / -type f | while read DIR; do
      numFile=$(expr $numFile + 1)
      temp=$(stat -size $FILE)
      SIZE=$(expr $temp + $SIZE)
      echo $numFile > numFile.tmp
      echo $SIZE > size.tmp
done
numFile=$(cat numFile.tmp)
SIZE=$(cat size.tmp)
RESULT=$(echo "scale=8; $numFile/$SIZE" | bc)
echo $RESULT

try this Smilie

Code:
#! /bin/sh
numFile=0
SIZE=0
find /root/test2/test2 -type f | while read DIR; do
    numFile=$(expr $numFile + 1)
    temp=$(stat -c '%s' $DIR)
    SIZE=$(expr $temp + $SIZE)
    echo $numFile > numFile.tmp
    echo $SIZE > size.tmp
done
RESULT=$(echo "scale=8; $(<numFile.tmp)/$(<size.tmp)" | bc)
echo "Total File / Size (Bytes) Ratio" $RESULT

Code:
echo "scale=8; $(printf $(du -ks / )) / $(find . -type f | wc -l)" | bc
