if two or more variables?
Hi all,
i need to read a variable and analyze if there are one or more variable:
Code:
read VAR
if "VAR is one ore two or more"; then
...
else
...
fi

Can anybody help?

I guess you want something similar to this:

echo "Input: "
read VAR

echo "Your input was: $VAR"

echo "$VAR" | grep ' ' >/dev/null

if [ $? != 0 ]; then
echo "\$VAR seems to contain one variable"
else
echo "\$VAR seems to contain two or more variables"
fi

$ ./checkvar.sh
Input: 
abc
Your input was: abc
$VAR seems to contain one variable
$ ./checkvar.sh
Input: 
abc 123
Your input was: abc 123
$VAR seems to contain two or more variables
$

Maybe you want to explain what you exactly want to do, bcs. this is not really a good solution, since the input could be " abc" and this script will report that it's only one variable, which in fact is correct, but if the input is "abc ", the script will report that there are two or more variables, which is not correct.
First it would be interesting if this is what you wanted to check, then we could suggest you an appropriate regex, which would ignore leading and trailing whitespaces.

I need to check if the input variable (from read) is one or two.
In case of one i'll use my actual script, but if is two i have to forward to another script:

echo ""

echo ""
echo -n "Inserire arco temporale (es: 1 - 0.25 - 2.5):"

  totale="mosh $R 'pmr -m $tempo ; wrnc ; $opzione ; exit '"
  eval $totale > temp
else
  totale="mosh $R 'pmr -m $tempo ; wrnc ; $opzione | grep $R ; exit '"
  eval $totale > temp


But in case of two, i should use an "if" before the only "if" in the script, to skip in case of two and use another command.

You can do the following in ksh:
