I don't know that you'd want to use this, but I did this recently to create a basic "whereis" command for my iPhone.
Code:
echo $PATH | tr ':' '\n' | while read line; do ls "${line}/${COMMAND}" 2>/dev/null; done

test...
# COMMAND=grep
# echo $PATH | tr ':' '\n' | while read line; do ls "${line}/${COMMAND}" 2>/dev/null; done
/usr/bin/grep
/bin/grep
#

It tries to list the command for every directory in your path. If it's not found, the ls error goes to /dev/null. If it is found, you get ls's output showing where it was found.

er, my 2nd post does it i think.
if you use parentheses it doesn't clobber IFS.

what more is there?

Code:
( IFS=:;find $PATH -type f |fmt -1| sort| uniq -d )
