Help with sed

Hi,

I have a string as follows

Code:
ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password"  -r "(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs))" -l memberof

The string (cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs) needs to be replaced with different values i have in a text file. The text file is as follows:

Code:

(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh)....

Is there a way this can be done using 'sed' to search for text between (|) and replace it with contents from the new file???

Any thoughts will be helpful

Thanks,

Where do you have it? In what variable? Or is it in a file?

How is it assigned?

Is the text file a single line?

If it's in a variable, you don't need sed.

Your example doesn't have any "between (|)"; there is only one pipe.

ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password" -r "(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs))" -l memberof

The above ldifde is in a bat file (my.bat)

The string (cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs) needs to be replaced with different values i have in a text file. The text file is as follows:

(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh)....

This is a single line which is in another text file (output.txt)

Your example doesn't have any "between (|)"; there is only one pipe. - I am trying to replace
"(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs))" with "(|(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh))" in ldifde.

Hope this makes it clear.

Code:
$ cat file1
ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password"  -r "(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs))" -l memberof
$ cat file2
(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh)
$ sed "s/(cn=[^)]*)(cn=[^)]*)/$(cat file2)/" file1
ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password"  -r "(|(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh))" -l memberof

Thanks for the reply.

I ran the command and it is actually appending the new string to the old one i.e.,

I am getting the following output with the command

Code:
ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password"  -r "(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs)(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh))" -l memberof

The output i am looking for is

Code:
ldifde -f c:/temp/file.txt -s server -a cn=abcd,cn=users,dc=company,dc=com "password"  -r "(|(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh))" -l memberof

---------- Post updated at 02:28 PM ---------- Previous update was at 02:12 PM ----------

I tried

Code:
sed "c/(cn=[^)]*)(cn=[^)]*)/$(cat tmp1.txt)/" file

instaead of

Code:
sed "s/(cn=[^)]*)(cn=[^)]*)/$(cat tmp1.txt)/" file

I got the expected output with this error

sed: command garbled: c/

can you show what you have in tmp1.txt and file.

s/search_string/replacement_string

Why did you use c instead of s?

Thanks for the reply. This is what i have in the file

(|(cn=abcd)(cn=pqrs))

This is what i have in tmp1.txt

(cn=mnop)(cn=ajkshd)(cn=akdh)

I was trying to change the string instead of substituting but it didnt really help.
