File 1
adg

File 2

knq
uxb

Output file
adg | beh
jmp | knq
twa | uxb

i tried paste file1 file 2 > outfile, but i don't know how to put "|" in between

How about generating a 3rd file called file3 that contains the same lines and filled with "|" symbol
Code:
for i in $(seq 1 $(wc -l file2 | awk '{print $1}')); do echo "|" ; done > file3

Then
paste file1 file3 file2

hi!

my output file should be:

Code:
adg | beh
jmp | knq
twa | uxb

but when i use the code above:

Code:
paste -d"|" file1 file2 >outputfile

it yields:

Code:
adg|beh
jmp|knq
twa|uxb

there is no space before and after the separator. when i tried this:

Code:
paste -d" | " file1 file2 >outputfile

yes, there is a space but no "|"

thanks!

Hi.

Maybe you could try...

Code:
paste -d '|' file1 file2 | sed -e "s/|/ | /" > outputfile
