Search in a column by a string
Hi All,

My file looks like :

hsdhj dsajhf jshdfajkh jksdhfj jkdhsfj
shfjhd shdf hdsfjkh jsdfhj hdshf
sdjh dhs foot dsjhfj jdshf
dasfh jdsh dsjfh jdfshj david

Now, I want to search entire column by a string "foot" or "david" or whatever I pass to search.

Please suggest.

New with scripting. A bit familier with grep and cut.

Cut works with delimeter and grep finds the rows. I tried these tools. I can find any column but not by passing a string.

Hi Deepak ,

You can try "egrep "

egrep -a "foot|david" <filename>

This command will fetch you lines which contains foot or david.

If you are finding column but not row, below one should help you some.
Code:
#!/usr/bin/perl
use strict;
my (@arr,$n);
open FH,"<a.txt";
while(<FH>){
	my @tmp=split(" ",$_);
	for(my $i=0;$i<=$#tmp;$i++){
	  $arr[$i].=" ".$tmp[$i];
	  $n=$i if ($tmp[$i] eq "stt") && (!$n);
	}	
}
print $arr[$n];

Thanks for the suggestion.
As Gaurav told of searching lines which contains that particular string.
Summer Cherry told something in perl. But I need to find out columns containing that string. Please suggest.
