directories hidden from "ls -al"
Hi:

I found some "hidden" directories created by a version control tool that can't be displayed by "ls -al". but user can "cd" into them and see the files inside.

My questions are:

1) what commands can reveal those directories when "ls -al" fails?

2) how do you create such directories?

This kind of behavior comes about by changing the ls executable for a custom one.
root kits install compromised commands like this to hide all of the extra code they have buried into the system and want to hide.

What version control tool did this? Most UNIX admins would be upset with this kind of a product.

Thanks for the response.

I could be wrong in blaming it to the version control tool.

The hidden directories are under the "workspace" the tool has created, but it could be put there by our admins for backup purpose.

I'll try to use "ls" from a difference source to see if there are more of those directories.

File names that contain "01" act hidden

Haveing an issue. Anytime a file is created with "01" (zero one) in the name - it cannot be viewed by LS or any other file listing command. Although the file is there, it cannot be seen. I can edit it, run it, anything, except see it..... What happened? Any ideas? (8 Replies)
