Actually, disregard my previous comment.

I have found the wonder that is jEdit. And I absolutely love it.

I am on Windows - hold the tomatoes!

I use TextPad.

I don't know if there is a Unix version though.

Depending on what I am doing, I use a variety of editors.

Mainly I use VI/VIM, nano, emacs, and gedit (if I am using Gnome or if I want an easy find/search feature).

If I'm stuck on a Windows box, like at school or at work, I use Notepad or Notepad++. And I just whatever text editor I can find on a Mac.Smilie

On Mac...

Smultron. It's free and works pretty good. The only thing missing is remote (FTP) editing. The macro facility uses the shell so any Unix commands are available. That part is really slick.

However, when I drop to the terminal window, I like ed because it's simple and every system has it on there.

But I'm a newbie and an idiot to all this so there's probably a better way.

There is only one - vi Smilie

Apart from an editor used on a propriety CAD system of the day, vi was the first editor I ever used. Probably wrote my first CV with it Smilie

I use emacs for any complicated scripting. I used to put it in edt emulation mode but I've gotten out of that habit. I learned edt editor on a pdp-11/23.
I use vi/vim for editing system files and minor edits.
