This is only a method that I thought without test.
Code:
echo $a|awk '{i=1;while($i){if($i~/[*?]/){printf "%s",$i;exit};i++}}' FS=','

There are a couple of options from me using internal ksh functions and tr which for a large number of loops through could be quicker than echo.... | awk .... as it doesn't have the overheads to repeatedly start new processes, but if you have the strings as a large input file, you could use tr:-
Code:
tr -d "*?" < in_file

If you have the strings as a large input file, you could use tr twice in a pipeline.
Code:
tr -d "*?" < in_file | tr -s "," > out_file
