rdate different port?
is it possible to use non-standard port for NTP? (as 123 is already taken)

Port 123 is reserved for NTP. See http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers.

Whatever is already using port 123 is the non-conforming application. Is you application using both TCP and UDP? NTP only uses UDP so if your application only uses TCP, you can still use 123 UDP for NTP.

if ftp and email and torrent can use whatever port I want, why can't rdate? and I'm not sure its 'non-conforming'. that application is also time-date server, just not in ntp format, and we have equipment that uses it.

Humm, you asked about NTP. Now you are talking about rdate. These are two completely different things! Rdate uses the Time Protocol (RFC 868) which is generally considered obsolete. It uses port 37.
