searching a file

Hi

At the moment I am able to add text to a file but what I need to do is make sure the same value is not duplicated.

Can anyone tell me how to search a file and prevent an update from taking place if the value to be entered already exists in the file?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Here is one way of doing it.

Code:
grep "needle" haystack >/dev/null 2> /dev/null
if [[ $? -eq 1 ]] ; then
  echo "No needle found in the haystack"
elif [[ $? -eq 2 ]] ; then
  echo "Something wrong with the haystack"
elif [[ $? -eq 0 ]]
  echo "Found needle in the haystack"
fi ;

checkout this

$1 should be your input word
tmp.txt is the file where you want to append.

#! /usr/bin/bash

b=$1
grep "$1" tmp.txt
if [ $? = 0 ]; then
echo "already exists"
else
echo "$b" >> tmp.txt
fi

Code:
grep -q "^${value}\$" file 2>/dev/null || echo "${value}" >> file
