XtMapWidget() XtMapWidget()
Name
XtMapWidget - map a widget to its display.
Synopsis
XtMapWidget(w)
Widget w;
Inputs
w Specifies the widget to be mapped. Must be of class Core or any subclass thereof.
Description
XtMapWidget() explicitly maps a widget's window, causing it to become visible. A widget must be realized before it can be mapped.
Usage
A widget should be managed before it is mapped; otherwise the window may not appear at the correct location or size.
If a widget's Core XtNmappedWhenManaged resource is set to True, the widget is automatically mapped when it is managed. This is the case
for most widgets. Widgets with this resource False must be mapped explicitly with XtMapWidget().
To explicitly unmap a widget without unmanaging it, use XtUnmapWidget().
The XtNmappedWhenManaged resource can also be set (and the widget mapped and unmapped) with XtSetMappedWhenManaged().

XtUnrealizeWidget() XtUnrealizeWidget()
Name
XtUnrealizeWidget - destroy the windows associated with a widget and its descendants.
Synopsis
void XtUnrealizeWidget(w)
Widget w;
Inputs
w Specifies the widget. Must be of class Core or any subclass thereof.
Description
XtUnrealizeWidget() unmanages the specified widget and destroys the windows associated with the widget and all of its non-popup descen-
dants.
The "Algorithm" section below explains the details of this process.
Usage
Note that this call simply destroys the windows associated with the widgets. The widget instances themselves remain intact. To recreate
the windows at a later time, call XtRealizeWidget() again. Compare this to XtDestroyWidget(), which destroys the widgets themselves.
Unmanaging a widget is the usual method for temporarily removing it from the screen. Unrealizing a widget frees up resources on the X
server, and may be a better choice for widgets that are only infrequently visible.
Algorithm
If the widget is currently unrealized, XtUnrealizeWidget() simply returns; otherwise, it performs the following:
o Unmanages the widget if the widget is managed.
o Makes a post-order (child to parent) traversal of the widget tree rooted at the specified widget and, for each widget that has declared
a callback list named unrealizeCallback, executes the procedures on the XtNunrealizeCallback list.
o Destroys the widget's window and any subwindows by calling XDestroyWindow() on the specified widget's window.
Any events that are either in the queue or that arrive following a call to XtUnrealizeWidget() will be dispatched as if the window(s) of
the unrealized widget(s) had never existed.

I have seen some misinformation regarding Unix file permissions. I will try to set the record straight. Take a look at this example of some output from ls:

I used to use ls -l cut to detrmine file size, and google searches didn't come up with anything else but 'stat' which doesn't appear on HPUX.
I discovered the humble 'wc -c' which does this job very neatly, and thought I would share it. (7 Replies)
