Using echo

I am using echo as follows

Code:
echo -n "arg_path = echo $0:h = $arg_path"

which produces
Code:
arg_path = echo /home/chrisd/tatsh/trunk/hstmy/bin/csh = /home/chrisd/tatsh/trunk/hstmy/bin/csh

However I want to get

Code:
arg_path = echo $0:h = /home/chrisd/tatsh/trunk/hstmy/bin/csh

# 2

Code:
... \$0:h ...

# 3

I have tried that but have been getting

Code:
echo "arg_path = echo \$0:h = $arg_path"

arg_path = echo \/home/chrisd/tatsh/trunk/hstmy/bin/csh = /home/chrisd/tatsh/trunk/hstmy/bin/csh

I can't reproduce this behaviour (you are using CSH?)

Code:
printf 'arg_path = echo $0:h = %s\n' $arg_path

Using tcsh

printf works fine

Code:
printf 'arg_pth = echo $0:h = %s\n' $arg_pth

arg_pth = echo $0:h = /home/chrisd/tatsh/branches/terr0.50/darwin

In the C shell, the backslash escapes everything except the newline,
the backslash and the dollar sign.

So there is no way to escape a variable in a double quote.The single
quote solves the problem

Code:
echo "arg_pth = echo "'$0'":h = $arg_pth"

I only had access to an old csh on AIX and the backslash worked fine.

Why you persist with this dreadful shell is anyone's guess!

Fully agree with you, but as the code is quite long and am currently behind schedule, that has to wait a bit. Starting porting some of the stuff to ksh.

With that logic this echoes "echo". Question about echo!

echo `echo ` doesn't echoes anything. And it's logic. But echo `echo `echo ` ` does echoes "echo". What's the logic of it? the `echo `echo ` inside of the whole (first) echo, echoes nothing, so the first echo have to echo nothing but echoes "echo" (too much echoing :P):o (2 Replies)
