TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEA(3) TAU Instrumentation API TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEA(3)NAME
TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEADROOM - Track the headroom (amount of memory for a process to grow) by periodically interrupting the program
SYNOPSIS
C/C++:
TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEADROOM(void);
Fortran:
TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEADROOM(void);
DESCRIPTION
Tracks the amount of memory available for the process before it runs out of free memory on the heap. This call sets up a signal handler
that is invoked every 10 seconds by an interrupt (this interval may be altered by using the TAU_SET_INTERRUPT_INTERVAL call). Inside the
interrupt handler, TAU evaluates how much memory it can allocate and associates it with the callstack using the TAU context events (See
TAU_REGISTER_CONTEXT_EVENT(3)). The user can vary the size of the callstack by setting the environment variable TAU_CALLPATH_DEPTH (default
is 2). This call is useful on machines like IBM BG/L where no virtual memory (or paging using the swap space) is present. The amount of
heap memory available to the program is limited by the amount of available physical memory. TAU executes a series of malloc calls with a
granularity of 1MB and determines the amount of memory available for the program to grow.
EXAMPLE
C/C++ :
TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEADROOM();
Fortran :
call TAU_TRACK_MEMORY_HEADROOM()

TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMEN(3) TAU Instrumentation API TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMEN(3)NAME
TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION - Enables instrumentation
SYNOPSIS
C/C++:
TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION(void);
Fortran:
TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION(void);
DESCRIPTION
TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION macro re-enables all TAU instrumentation. All instances of functions and statements that occur between the
disable/enable section are ignored by TAU. This allows a user to limit the trace size, if the macros are used to disable recording of a set
of iterations that have the same characteristics as, for example, the first recorded instance.
EXAMPLE
C/C++ :
int main(int argc, char **argv) {
foo();
TAU_DISABLE_INSTRUMENTATION();
for (int i =0; i < N; i++) {
bar(); // not recorded
}
TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION();
bar(); // recorded
}
Fortran :
call TAU_DISABLE_INSTRUMENTATION()
call TAU_ENABLE_INSTRUMENTATION()

Is it generally not a good idea in a multithreaded program to make lots of malloc calls (dynamic memory requests) because of the limited nature of the memory heap ?
Out of curiosity (warning it may sound silly), but would using mutexs (mutual exclusion) help to minimise chances of runtime errors... (12 Replies)
Hi,
I have a HP-Unix server, version B.11.23. Can someone tell me how to find out the physical memory & virtual memory (swap) in my server? & what is Page fault? & is there any limitation for page fault?

Hi,
I have a problem with memory on AIX 5.3. On this server, we have JDE Edwards (ERP) and Oracle Database (9.2.0.7.0).
We have 4 Gb for physical memory and 3 Gb for paging space.
When I stop all services (JDE, Oracle and all other services), the physical memory is not free (4 Gb)

I have a Java program. I want to measure the total memory used by the program, especially the peak memory. Is there a way to do it?
I have tried utilities like time (which returns 0) and top (which is not very useful) as the program does not run for long.
Can anyone suggest a way to do this?... (5 Replies)

Hi All,
I have a process running on my AIX 5.3 server box. The process runs fine for 5-6days but then crashes. The log file shows malloc failure and the svmon (Virtual memory size), ps -lef (SZ value) are also gradually increasing. But unfortunately MALLOCDEBUG and any other memory debugging... (3 Replies)

Hi ,
I have 8Gb memory in my JS21 server. When I run svmon it shows 3655Mb memory is utilized and 4344Mb free. I have configured 8Gb paging space and 14% is utilized which is 1Gb. I dont have memory issues but just want to know Why 1gb paging is utilized when my almost 4Gb real memory is free?... (6 Replies)
