Network I would like to begin programming in unix and linux

HI ALL
My name is Jeet i have 2 years exp. in linux administration and now i wanted to do development in unix and linux. which language should i use to begin my carrer in programming in unix. can anyone help me out ?

I can't make any book reccomendations off the top of my head, but C would be the logical place to start. Linux itself, and nearly all it's utilities, shells, and applications are programmed in C -- up to and including the C compiler itself!

As far as good publishers for computer books are concerned, I have heard it said that the O'Reilly books ( http://www.oreilly.com/ ) and the SAMS books ( http://www.samspublishing.com/ ) are very good, however i haven't done more than skim through them myself. These recommendations come from people i very much trust on this subject though.
