Beginning to learn Linux from home

I have an extra desktop at home that's running Linux and wanted to make a script that will check for updates and install it automatically but couldn't find any sort of script out there that would implement this. I've been slowly learning Linux and thought this would be great to have in my OS

Most Linux distributiions have some sort of unattended automatic upgrade facility available.

For example, here is a pointer to Ubuntu automatic unattended update configuration

I'm kind of new to scripting. Will that update my Linux and install it automatically or is taht for something different?

It's not for "linux", just for Ubuntu. Linux is the 3-megabyte file which gets loaded when your computer turns on; a toolkit for opening files, running programs in a multitasking manner, and talking to devices and networks. Everything else is application software. What programs it gets shipped with it can be very different from distribution to distribution.

What you see in the link isn't scripting, just configuration files for the program Ubuntu uses to keep itself up to date...

I originally posted this in the scripting section of this website but was moved here for some reason. I wanted to write a script that would check for updates and run it automatically.

Because a script to update a Linux distribution would be very distribution-specific.
