Unable to get password prompt

Unable to get password prompt
Hi

I am using a Solaris 2.5.1 and i am unable to logon on the console.

When i key in say, root on the login prompt, it does not prompt me for password but instead return to the login prompt again.


Please help.

Hi,

Looks like a corrupted passwd entry.
I'dd check your passwd for any errors. Note that the root-entry should always be the first entry of your passwd-file.

the command pwconv should recreate your passwd-file after any changes as well. Make sure to have a copy in place, cause it removes any error-lines.

Try to su, or so. The pwconv should be your best solution now. If not the only one might be boot -s Smilie

Just to add on i am unable to telnet from a remote to the server as well

HPUX does not recognise \h,\w,\u to display the hostname,working directory and username respectively. So how do i set the PS1 variable to display my current working Directory as my prompt?
