for example in AIX you can type "prtconf" to get Machine Serial Number

jbvrprd(root)/> prtconf
System Model: IBM,7040-671
Machine Serial Number: 83AFDBC
Processor Type: PowerPC_POWER4
Number Of Processors: 2
Processor Clock Speed: 1500 MHz
CPU Type: 64-bit
Kernel Type: 32-bit
LPAR Info: 2 BVRPRD
Memory Size: 4096 MB
Good Memory Size: 4096 MB

May or may not be possible. Depends on the type of hardware. For most IPF models, machinfo should work.

# dmidecode

This command will give U the same in Redhat Linux
