How to resize a logical volume to free up some space using sam?

Hey all, is it possible to free up space off some partitions? during an install of hp-ux i set some allocated diskspace to lets say, /home to 1024 mb, but now i want it to be 512mb..

I'm looking at sam right now at the "Disks and File Systems" menu , can i modify it at all in like, List-> file sys/log vol/swap/vol grps? or no?

thanks

I doubt that sam can do it at all. Whether it's even possible depends on a lot of stuff. If /home is a vxfs filesystem then fsadm may be able to shrink the filesystem. I'm not sure, but this may require the Advanced JFS product. Once the filesystem has been shrunk, you could then shrink the lv. If this is not possible you will need to destroy /home. Then allocate /home at whatever size you want. You would need to backup and restore the contents of /home.

lvreduce will reduce a logical volume. But it can't shrink the filesystem residing in the logical volume.

Reducing a filesystem or/and Lvol, is not really advised as a good practice. It is possible if you can defrag the filesystem, but again that is not recommended.

My best suggestion is to backup the data or move it to another location... then destroy the Lvol and recreate it.

Or as I have done in the past... create a totally new filesytem, move all the directories and data... then reclaim the original filesystem.

It can be done as follows, but again I dont recommend this procedure.

# fsadm -b "new_size_in_mb" /mountpoint
# lvreduce -L "new_size_in_mb /dev/vg01/lvol1
