second monitor trouble

I have installed ubuntu for the first time (long time mac user) and i woudl like to connect to my 25 inch hannsg monitor but the resolution is so low. I have figured out that i have to edit my xorg.conf file but the problem is is that i dont have in my /etc/X11 folder. I have tried to run

Xorg.conf

but throws up this error

Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.

Please consult the The X.Org Foundation support
at X.Org Wiki - Home
for help.

I have been dealing with a similar issue. Tried updating the BIOS, replaced videocard, browsed for drivers, even update the Xorg configuration file manually. Another distribution alleviated the problem, since the resolution has improved, but not to the full extent. So I am still looking for the correct approach.
