I did not say we're not using ssh - I said we're using another (commercial) distribution of ssh
Anyway - for purely system maintenance, you can use console access, and for package deploys you can use ftp ... thats honestly all you need

So you're not using OpenSSH, you're using SSH. Honestly I didn't saw SSH on the AIX default packages.

PS: What do you mean by "console access" ?

there is a separate CD usually delivered together with AIX: Linux Toolbox for AIX or something like that ... you can download it for free from IBM if you dont have it - containing OpenSSH

In our environment we only have power5/power6 machines - console access is when you open a console window from the hmc to the lpar you want to do anything ...

So with that console access you're talking about you have access to the server from outside your LAN/DMZ also, I mean you don't have to be physical near that console, am I right?

yep you're right - I am even in another country than most of the servers I support - they are global deployed, I am not
All you need is a connection from remote into your network, and maybe you have to go via a gateway server into your DMZ, but no need to be locally there at all.
