If the login is failing because you need a passwordless login by a script, and the script is failing - it is probably because the ADMCHG flag is still set.
Note: passwordless is not recommended. Use the following at your own (companies) risk!
In short, you need pwdadm -f NOCHECK username to disable password checks to be sure you can enter a NULL password, and you will need to enter it again so that the ADMCHG (admin change) flag is cleared after you set the NULL password.
Note: You need to be root to perform the grep -p username /etc/security/passwd command

Max password expiration is blank. What does it mean?
If it's like this below

then there's no expiration.

gpasswd [-r|-l|-u] [group]

gpasswd changes passwords for group accounts. Only an administrator may change the password for any group. The used hash algorithmus is
defined by the value of GROUP_CRYPT or, if not specified, CRYPT from /etc/default/passwd. If not configured, the traditinal des algorith-

OPTIONS -r Remove group password.
-l A system administrator can lock the password of the specified group.
-u A system administrator can unlock the password of the specified group, if the group is not passwordless afterwards (it will not
unlock a group that has only "!" as a password).
