postlog - Postfix-compatible logging utility
SYNOPSIS
postlog [-iv] [-c config_dir] [-p priority] [-t tag] [text...]
DESCRIPTION
The postlog command implements a Postfix-compatible logging interface for use in, for example, shell scripts.
By default, postlog logs the text given on the command line as one record. If no text is specified on the command line, postlog reads from
standard input and logs each input line as one record.
Logging is sent to syslogd(8); when the standard error stream is connected to a terminal, logging is sent there as well.
The following options are implemented:
-c config_dir
Read the main.cf configuration file in the named directory instead of the default configuration directory.
-i Include the process ID in the logging tag.
-p priority
Specifies the logging severity: info (default), warn, error, fatal, or panic.
-t tag Specifies the logging tag, that is, the identifying name that appears at the beginning of each logging record.
-v Enable verbose logging for debugging purposes. Multiple -v options make the software increasingly verbose.

The default location of the Postfix main.cf and master.cf configuration files.
syslog_facility (mail)
The syslog facility of Postfix logging.
syslog_name (see 'postconf -d' output)
The mail system name that is prepended to the process name in syslog records, so that "smtpd" becomes, for example, "postfix/smtpd".

i'm having some problems with syslogging.
i figured out how to allow logging from a specific host (my webramp).
syslogd -a ipaddress subnetmask
first, what file do the logs go to? second, is there anyway i can save the webramp logs into another file? (13 Replies)

I'm looking for the most effective way to capture the text in between a set of parenthesis.
For example, my input is this(IBM WebSphereMQ Queue Manager Status):

I am trying to append a switch to a line in an rc file, but it doesnt seem to be working:
when i run this command :
cat rc.tcpip |sed "s/syslogd "$src_running" /syslogd "$src_running" "-N" /"
it still reads:
start /usr/sbin/syslogd "$src_running"

If I am running a cat|awk|sed on a file to get a bunch of numbers between 1 and 500 billion, how can I stay in stream, and still compare "this value" with "the previous value"?

I am using linux and trying to format logs. I have grepped for stuff like invalid users and /or error. However, the way the logs are formatted, sometimes the full error is not on the line, ie. it is on the next line. If I grep something, like:
cat /var/spool/mail/* |grep -i session |awk... (8 Replies)
I'm trying to add logging to an existing script which echos a number of lines to the screen. I've added a switch to the script that is going to suppress much of this output and put it in a file instead.

I tried to extract 19 characters (default) enclosed with in tag from a file using cut command. If the characters comprises of double space, the cut command gives the output with a single spacing.
