what is the directory "lost+found" and how is it used?

The files and directories usually found in the root inode which were produced by inconsistencies from an abrupt halt will be recovered by fsck in phase 3 and put into the lost+found directory.

The phases (passes) performed by the UFS version of the fsck command are:

* Initialization
* Phase 1 - Check blocks and sizes
* Phase 2 - Check path names
* Phase 3 - Check connectivity
* Phase 4 - Check reference counts
* Phase 5 - Check cylinder groups


you have to learn something about UFS before understanding this..... hope that this small information helps you....
