"Kludge"

Hi All,

I just read a thread here where Neo uses the word "Kludge". This brought long memories flooding back to me. Does anyone know the true origins of this word in the context of the IT industry??

I remember about 40 years ago people asking how IBM was growing so fast and the response was it's caused by the Kludge. The Kludge was defined as selling a product that you didn't have and then fulfilling the order by designing the product quickly afterwards. IBM salesmen in striped suits went out to very big customers (e.g. the DoD) and agreed to supply new systems. When they got back to the office the techies would say that they couldn't do that but the salesman would say you'd better design it because I've already sold it. As far as I'm concerned, that's the kludge.

Anybody got other definitions????

A kludge is a formal work defined in the dictionary.

From Wikipedia:

Kludge - Wikipedia

A network kludge

Quote:
A kludge or kluge (/klʌdʒ, kluːdʒ/) is a workaround or quick-and-dirty solution that is clumsy, inelegant, inefficient, difficult to extend and hard to maintain.
From one dictionary:

Kludge | Definition of Kludge by Merriam-Webster

Quote:
a haphazard or makeshift solution to a problem and especially to a computer or programming problem

To me, the Kludge, Kludgie (or Cludge/Cludgie) is a Scottish word for the toilet. Does that help? Does IT just collect all the 'output' ?

Hi Folks,

There is some pretty good stuff on Kludge here and Kluge here - my first intro to the word was in the mid 1970's on board ship.

But the meaning was just the same - with the same confusions I might add!
