I think I started in '87 with Texas Instruments Xenix, then SCO Xenix, Altos System V, MIPS RISC/os, SCO Unix, SCO Openserver, Novell Unixware, AIX, Linux (Slackware, Red Hat, Open SUSE, CentOS, Debian), OSX. I had to do Novell and all the Microsoft operating systems, starting with MS-DOS, along the way.

I forgot there was some Solaris in there somewhere.

My first experience was 2-3 years ago, while having training for my first job in Pune, India.
I forgot what unix flavor was that btw Smilie
I learned shell scripting, and that was fun though got stressed for passing the exam.
After back to home country assigned to project using Sun Solaris. I was able to explore and developing my scripting skill there.
At the end of 2008 I joined another company and work as core network engineer (telecommunication), now I rarely have time to develop my skill and interest bcz unix skill is not the most important here.. Smilie

But for having familiar with unix based system and scripting, it was a big plus to me in my work Smilie

1983, on a PDP-11/34 running System 3. or RSTS/E, depending on which disks we booted with.

1981 my school had a Perkin-Elmer running some UNIX flavour I don't remember today. There was a classroom with about twenty terminals and another room for doing homework with ten more. These ten terminals where ocupied almost around the clock. Only during the last two years of the Oberstufe (sort of sixth form) pupils were allowed to use the equippment. When we were too young for using the terminals officially we lurked around the elder students peeping their accounts and passwords. So the first thing I learned was not Pascal or C as intended by the curriculum but how to play "Star Trek" on the console. The second thing I learned was how to patch the code to rise energy and the number of photon torpedos to blast the Klingons without having to return to base... what an evil hacker I was Smilie
Lost contact to Unix from about 1985 till 1993 when I got into contact with both Linux and AIX. Picked up a job in the IT in 1996 and sticked to AIX since. I still learn something new about AIX almost every week.

It was 1996 and I was 15 & lucky to have the UK's compulsory 2-week Work Experience in a London Hospital.

Introduced by an elderly bofh to Solaris 2.5 on a Sparc Server 20. Awesome experience.

I was given the Jewell CD set of InfoMagic Linux Developers Resource, April 96 edition. Commence bedroom tinkering with Slackware and redhat for a couple of years and then FreeBSD for about 6 years, heading back to Linux since.

Professionally, it's mostly been Solaris, Linux and AIX with a few forays into Tru64, HP-UX, etc..

But i'll never forget that elderly bofh and his inane random noises and twitching, cordrouy trousers, knitted jump and the stench of Nescafe. What a guy.

In 1993 my dad brought home ( I think he pilfered/stole them from work ) two Cd's: Turbo Linux for Workstations and Turbo Linux for Servers. I was in college at the time and I was still using Win 3.1 I installed the workstation version and was utterly confused by the /dev/hda1/ filesystem vs the C:/ filesystem. It took me a few years before I tried Linux again. FWIW I still have the 2 TurboLinux CD's!
