What is the difference between /etc/profile and .profile?

/etc/profile is typically only editable by root.

$HOME/.profile is editable by the user.

both are read during login only.

/etc/profile is for every user.
.profile is a per user file and belongs in the home directory.

Thanks for your reply. But is there any relationship or dependency of these two files?

nope.

No dependencies, but note that /etc/profile is read before .profile.
