MySQL How to learn UNIX?
Hey everybody, I am a 25 year old web programmer in Malaysia. I am not hapy with my line of work and I want to do something more. I know asp.net,asp,php and jsp.But they dont really land me in a good promising job wich I realy love.
I am more interested in Oracle DBMS. now to be a DBA in Oracle (Oracle DBA) I need to know UNIX...please correct me if im wrong.
I wanna do this all this by 2010 february. 1 year. I dont mind the pressure i gota deal with, but Im determined. Please tell me how to be good (being an expert isnt 1 years deal i gess) in UNIX...oracle I wil pickup on my own, as already I am.

In order to administer Oracle, you don't necessarily need to know UNIX, but it sure helps...
My suggestion would be to pick one of
  • Linux: Debian, Slackware or Gentoo (ordered in subjective view of difficulty for a new user)
  • Generic UNIX: Sun Solaris or one of the *BSD distributions
Install it on a spare HDD or Virtual Machine for starters, to get accustomed to the new interface, before starting to use it as the main OS.
As for administration and scripting: at The Linux Documentation Project you can find many tutorials and How-Tos on administration and scripting, but I'm sure other can provide more in depth links to that.
If you need help at any point: just ask.

thanks a lot pludi and angheloko, the links and the comments sure does help a lot. I do know how to use and operate Ubuntu Desktop. I am still learning the comand line interface for that, but surely part by part. Does that help?

Ubuntu is a good start, although I would not recommend getting too used to it, as it introduces some bad practices (from my viewpoint):
  • it relies too heavily on the graphical interface,
  • shields too much information about what is happening from the user (I'm not talking about reducing complexity, but telling you what is being done),
  • and softens the difference between a normal user and root.
Aside from that it's a good start, and you can (quite) easily switch to Debian from Ubuntu as the latter is built on top of the former.

Download Sun Solaris (Intel version) and install it on your PC and learn. If you don't want Sun, you can go with Linux such as Redhat.

I don't agree with any of the bullet point above.

We use Ubuntu on this site and I have never seen a graphical interface. Therefore, nothing is shielded and there is nothing "softening the difference between root and normal users".

Just because an OS distribution might have a nice GUI does not mean you are forced to use it. I have used Ubuntu Linux for a number of years and never use a GUI.
