$? = Exit status variable
hi,
exit status variable $?, returns some digits.

0 ---> succes.
1..126
Failure (the program itself will decide what the numbers mean)
127
Command not found
128..254
The program did not exit normally. (E.g., it crashed, or received a signal)
255
Invalid exit code

well, if $? returns 1-254, i want to get error message.. i want to see error not a digit... how can i do it ?

Generally this depends on the binary/program you started before echoing $?. If it has an error message as output, then you can see this. Usually it's written to stderr or stdout, depending how the programmer has written it.

The ranges you posted is probably more a guideline.

If you want to write your own error message translation, just test with "if/then/fi", if $? is >=1 or <=254 and print out the error you want.

thanks for ur reply. i have a ksh script.. in this script, i have codes like below..

sqlplus - username/passwd .......

if [ echo $? ="0" ]
success
else
failed

i want to catch error, if sqlplus is failed..

Since Oracle failures can't be understood by just a single line (at least I can't) I suggest spooling the run to a file and using that for further analysis.

i dont mean oracle failures... i can cath oracle failures. i mean failures,
for instance, oracle is shutdown while sqlplus is runnig...
