Can someone please give me information about WAN and LAN

I just need to know the important concepts. I tried searching on the internet for information about this but got bombarded with too many un-neccessary details I find confusing and helpless.

I just need to know WAN and LAN concerning how to monitor them and fix or (troubleshoot) basic problems

WAN == Wide Area Network

LAN == Local Area Network

when you are setting up your routing tables this makes a difference when setting up your gateways. however in concept there is not much difference except that one is usually smaller, and may or may not be connected to a WAN. if you have a home network with 5 computers connected together through a router, then you have a LAN. an example of a WAN is the internet.

I would just search google for lan/wan introductions/tutorials

Here's a few sites:

LAN Intro
LAN technology

Intro to WAN Technologies
WAN technology
