You need to run both of the comands. The first sets a value in ${linn} and the second command displays a certain number of lines (controlled by the tail command) before the searched for text based on what is in ${linn}.

However, this will only run well if only one data match.

thats the problem
1 match only

but there are lots of matches in the data i will be searching in

anyway thanks for helping me
it might be usefull for me some other time

looking for more suggestion guys.....

In my script I read a input file and search all the files in a directory and it's sub-directories for that string using: find . -type f -print | xargs grep $var1 This just displays all the lines the string was found on. Too much data. What I need is to store in a file one time those... (17 Replies)
