compiled software installed correctly?

Greetings all, first time poster.

I have always had an interest in Unix and so decided to try and learn some on my own. I have learned a great deal by just lurking, so for those of you who patiently share your knowledge-thank you!

I am in the process of compiling and installing some software; specifically libraries for PHP and MySQL. How can I tell if the software has installed correctly?

After going through ./configure && make && make install everything seems ok. But issuing a pkginfo -l | grep *zlib* does not come back with anything (to search for zlib).

Probably because that would only work with a pre-confgiured package.

Anyway, how does a person confirm that compiled software installs correctly?

Thank you,
~Robert

You can try "make test" or to run some software like MediaWiki to see if things work corectly. These packages might not have zlib pre-configured to work with them. Besides, you wouldn't use "grep *zlib*"... use "grep zlib" without asterisks.

Thanks! I'll give that a try.

And it looks like I need to practice using grepSmilie

Unless you used pkgadd to add zlib to your system, pkginfo is not going to return any information about zlib.
