ok, first off, sorry i took so long to repost my current status, i wanted to make surei try everything before i post back as to not waste anyones time. i tried every possible configuration i could think of, i even tried different IDE cables i had lying around, and when that didnt work i bought new ones and tried those. i also bought a box of jumpers at a computer show, and tried those too. so basically, whatever drive i set as master, it will mount standard data cds, but no music cds. the slave cdrom drive, wont mount anything, and gives the same error messages that i have posted before. at boot up the system detects both drives and prints the correct make and model of each drive, each one assigned to the correct location, master, slave. let me say again incase i forgot to, both these drives have worked together with windows, so the drives are fully functional, as far as i can tell. ive also tried multiple data cds, and multiple music cds, as well as data cd-r's and music cd-r's. whats wrong here?? and thank you again for your time.

Another shot-in-the-dark:

How old is the motherboard? I know older ones used to require you to configure the devices specifically, as in, indicate that master 0 was hard disk, slave 0 was cdrom, etc.

Newer motherboards are usually able to self configure these - have you checked such settings in the BIOS? Again, it's probably one of those things that Microshaft ignores!

naw my boards pretty new. its an intel with onboard NIC and a P4. the bios settings are fine ( ithink) wheni realized i had these problems i tried setting the drive detection manually but the problem persisted, now i have it on auto. also i just rebooted now and took a look through the bios settings and i didnt really see anything that would make a difference, however if someone knows anything i may have over looked, please let me know! i noticed this, which i dont really understand, my system emulates scsi for ide atapi cdroms?
<6>scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
<4> Vendor: PLEXTOR Model: CD-R PX-W1210A Rev: 1.04
<4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
<4> Vendor: ATAPI Model: CD-ROM SPEED-8X Rev: 8.3D
<4> Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02

this might just be something i never knew about and is completly normal. however i see no reason why ide devices would be scsi emulated? maybe there is something i am missing. those are the right attributes of my drives. that entry is from /var/log/boot.msg
here is /var/log/warn

ok it turns out ive been doing something wrong, still having problems, but heres what works now. i have to use /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1 to mount the cdburner and the cdrom. so ill have to change what /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrecorder points to. however, music cds are still no go. same errors as before. and after a search on google i read that music cds arent mounted. so i will read more on this. thanks for the help i recieved livin free and wintellect!
incase anyone has similar problems and comes accross this thread:
make sure you know which drive is master and which is slave, if your system sets up a /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrecorder and they are not working right, find out what devices your drives actually are. mine were /dev/sr0 and /dev/sr1. so i got rid of /dev/cdrom and /dev/cdrecorder and i just made a simlink :
ln -s /dev/sr0 /dev/cdrecorder
and then
ln -s /dev/sr1 /dev/cdrom

and also incase someone else didnt know this, becausei didnt know this, music cds are not mounted. they are read just through whatever software you are using to play them. if your using xmms , just go to play location, and type in corresponding device path. again, thanks for everyones help
