grep something to find which files, lines contain something

in aix, i use grep something * to get the files, lines that contain something. but i couldnt get the same result from a sun box. what is the equivalent? thanks

Humm.... I was under the impression that Grep worked the same under any flavour of Unix ...

grep works for me on suns. I use it almost every day.

Double quotes are always good for wildcards. I think that maybe what they are looking for.

Here is a post I issued a little while ago that may help. You can create a list of files to search this may be more productive.

Or you can always search for "sun" and "grep" together. Smilie

If you are using the Bourne or Korn shells, you may have done "set -f", which disables filename generation. I think there is also something in the Z shell that will selectively disable filename generation based on the command you're entering.
