Sed

I am trying to use sed to substitute two or more spaces with a new line.

I have tried sed s/\ \ */^/g and other such things but I can't get it to work.

Any suggestions???

sed 's/ */\
/g' < inputfile

You press return after the backslash and keep on typing.

sed -e "s/ */\n/g" should work for you

Cheers!

Perhaps it should. However it doesn't work for me on hp-ux 11.0. Which system are you using?

By the way, both Visnu and I should have used "code" tags on our solutions. We both have two spaces after the 'sed "s/', but they show up as a single space.
Code:
sed 's/ */\
/g' < inputfile

my aplogies, perhaps a \n is not supported in the replacement string always... I've used cygwin to test this... I shouldn't have used "should work"...

I have a question though...

in the sed's s command

s/basic regular expression/replacement/flags

Am I correct when I say that since a regular expression cannot match a new line we will not be able to solve the below problem using the above s command?

say I have a string...
"first
second"

having an embedded newline... can we use sed to make it "first and second" ?

Thanks again!
Vishnu.
