gzip, multiple files

Hello Everyone,

Here is what I am trying to do. I have four text files, I want to gzip them under unix and mail the zipped file via outlook. I am able to do this easily enough, but using winzip or pkunzip to unzip the file, there is only one file. (In essence, all four files were concatenated). Is there a utility I can use to zip multiple files, that when are unzipped are seperate files? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You can use tar easily for this:

Code:
tar -cvzf myfilename.tar.gz /<path>/<files>*

WinZip can also process tar archives as well.

I also believe that you can specify diff paths in succession .

tar -cvf myfile.tar.gz /path/to/file /other/path/to/file

This will pull files from two diff paths into tarball.
