UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers

Please help I am new to Unix and want to change file names so that when the file is accessed the file name automatically appends date and time. eg. letter.txt when executed becomes letter0211141800.txt if executed at 18:00 on 14/11/02.

I know this is a simple question but I currently don't have access to man pages and need it urgently.

Unless it is coded into the executable, you can't just change the name because someone ran it on the fly. Besides, then the next person wanting to run the executable would have to find the new name. If you are looking to just log who has run a executable, you would have to code that into it to send input to a log file.

What business application does this have?

Look at the ls man page (Man pages online under user commands for info on listing the last time a file was accessed).

The best way to do this is to have a shell program which can execute the file and rename it after the successfull execution...,

Also, you need to look up mtime and ctime these both show you different times when a file is updated or accessed.
