create new partition

My Linux systemís disk is partitioned as follows:

center; 1 | 1 | 1 . DEVICE MOUNT POINT SIZE _ hda1 / 100Mb hda5 /usr2048Mb hda6 /home 10Mb hda7 /var512Mb hda8 swap 12Gb

There is 4Gb of unpartitioned free space remaining on the disk (in the logical extended partition)

The /usr partition is running out of space, mostly because of files under /usr/local.

how can I create a new partition for /usr/local, and move the contents to there

semaphore,

You can create a partition like ( /usr/tmp) then copy all the contents of /usr/local to /usr/tmp then modify the /etc/fstab.Just to be sure dont delete the contents of your old /usr/local so that you can restore if you failed to point to ne location.
# 3
Bring the server into single user mode or boot your server via CDROM and run fdisk and create the partition, mount the disk on a RW directory, copy (use tar) all the files over to the new partition and edit fstab.

Boot the server back and you will have a new partition.

Copying using tar command:
tar cf - /mnt/usr/local | ( cd /mnt/usr/newlocal/ ; tar xvf - )

Once you have copyed local, rename old local to local.old.
Once the server boots back up without any issues, delete local.old.
