"pattern not found" ???

When editing/viewing files with the vi editor, whenever I try to exit I get a "pattern not found" message. This message occurs even if I just open the file and try to close it without changing anything. Does anyone know why this is happening? It doesn't matter what file it is.

maybenexttime62,

What key sequence are you using to exit vi?

You might not be hitting the <escape> <shift> <colon> to get into "vi command mode"...... (the mode on the bottom with the ":" symbol) You would get a 'pattern not found' error if you were accidentally in a search mode (the mode with a "/" with <escape> <backslash> ).

Just a thought.

The full sequence from visual mode is:
:wq!
:q
It sounds like you are using:
/wq!
which would search your file for "wq!". You can also do:
ZZ

yes there is a front slash at the command line. The <escape><shift><colon> worked. Thanks!
