Network Virus !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

can linux get a virus on the boot sec from windows? becuse my buddys computer micro trend cmos virus keeps telling him that
there is a boot sec virus on my hdd is that possable or is the box
being dumb and looking at the linux boot as a virus? it was set up as a windows box not a linux box! please can any 1 help me please?

from the way i read your post. your friend has a dual boot box. and when he was in windows he got a virus that has affected the mbr. Sounds logical i wuold suggest running an anti-virus progi in windows to try and fix it.

I had an old Trend Micro that used to complain about a possible boot sector virus. It was caused when I fdisked it and installed FreeBSD - it didn't recognize the boot sector any longer.

Try running AV in windows (make sure it specifically checks your boot sector) - if it doesn't find anything, it's probably just because you overwrote your old MBR with GRUB or LILO or whatever.

I've had the CMOS Trend Micro virus checker display the boot-sector virus warning for other reasons too.. and none of them were ever because there actually was a boot-sector virus..Smilie

Not that you shouldn't take it seriously and double-check it..

virus !!!!!!!!!! mbr

ok guys i checked for virus and not a thing found
and i all so A:fdisk /mbr to so i guess i'm safe right? and all mandrake 9 sucks very slow in openGL games i recomend 8.2 over 9 i'm on a p4 and a p3 800 and a AMD Zuse 1600mhz and mandrake 9 is still slower than poo

virus detection

IS there virus software for unix? I worked in a Solaris environment and dont remember having anything. I also ask because the current enviroment i am working on is Microsoft and they argue that they do not use unix because of virus detection. Any input would be greatly appreciated. (1 Reply)
