Getting Comfortable With Unix at Home

I'm new to using unix and i was told that to get a little more comfortable with it and what it entails i should download a VMware virtual server and then downlaod ubuntu. I just wanted to know if anyone had any opinions on this and any advice on learning the ropes?

VMware used to cost quite a bit. Maybe there is a free download demo - I don't know.
You do understand that VMware allows two operating systems to run concurrently on your PC. And if you don't like ubuntu at all, you will have to uninstall a lot of software.

Otherwise, the plan is fine

ahhh i see i think the idea is to install ubuntu on the vmware server (which i managed to get) if not ubuntu what would you recommend? at the moment im mainly going to be using it to learn the unix language and to navigate around in a telnet session
