Booting off of a cd on a Sun Box

I have a Sun box that I am trying to get started up, but everytime it will crap out because it is bound to an NIS domain that no longer exists. The Master for that domain was put out of commission. It was suggested to me that I could boot off of the Installation cd for the OS (Solaris 8) and mount the hard drive onto /a and change the domainname from there. However, I don't know how to get the box to boot off the CD.

Can anyone tell me what to do or suggest a website that may have the answer?

If this is a stupid question, I apologize.

This should work:

1. Put the cd for Solaris 8 in the cdrom (duh).
2. Reboot the system if it is running. When it starts to come up, hit stop-a.
3. type 'boot cdrom' and hit enter.

It should boot from the cd then.

just in case you dont have a sun keyboard on hand and you access it via someother type of console.

use contorl + break to do a stop-a. then you can type boot cdrom.

heck if i were you i would just boot single user mode and mount the drives alter the files. but do what you will. Smilie

Error single user boot will do

I think you do not need a boot from the install CD.

When you are on the boot prompt (after stop-a) you can boot with boot -s instead boot cdrom

after the single userboot the box asks you for the root password, when you logged in you can do your maintaince in /etc
